Peace is one of the central themes of Islam. In fact, the Arabic word Islam is derived from the same Semitic root (s-l-m) as salām, meaning peace, wholeness, and well-being. One of God’s names in the Qur’an is As-Salām (“The Source of Peace”). As-Salām
The most common expression is the traditional greeting:
As-salāmu ʿalaykum
Peace be upon you.
The customary response is:
Wa ʿalaykum as-salām
And peace be upon you also.
This greeting reflects the importance of wishing peace upon others in daily life.

A frequently recited prayer from the Qur’an is:
Rabbanā ātinā fi d-dunyā ḥasanah, wa fi l-ākhirati ḥasanah, wa qinā ʿadhāba n-nār.
Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Many Muslims also pray in words such as:
O Allah,
grant us peace in our hearts,
peace in our homes,
and peace among all people.
Guide us in justice,
mercy,
and compassion.
Many Muslims recite this supplication after completing their daily prayers:
Allāhumma anta as-Salām, wa minka as-salām, tabārakta yā Dhā al-Jalāli wa al-Ikrām.
O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.
